Ans. NRP India FGM Project offers the following courses -

NRP Provider Courses - of 2 types;

Basic Newborn Care and Resuscitation (BNCRP) and Advanced NRP

NRP Instructor Courses - of 2 levels;

Regional Trainer and District Instructor

Ans. The differences between the 2 courses are as follows -
BNCRP Provider Course -
- Teaches a stepwise approach to Basic Neonatal Care and Resuscitation.
- Participants must successfully complete Lessons 1 thru' 6 of NSSK manual
a. Resuscitation of newborn baby (upto using Bag and Mask - for providing Positive Pressure Ventilation) - As by doing this basic skill effectively one can ensure successful resuscitation of 99% of newborns.
b. Care of baby at birth
c. Prevention of infection
d. Thermal protection (including KMC)
e. Feeding of Normal and LBW babies
f. Transport of Newborn
Recommended for all personnel attending a labor and newborn baby

The Advanced NRP Provider Course -
a. Teaches complete neonatal resuscitation
b. Participants should complete Lessons 1 thru' 9, of AAP’s Text book of Neonatal Resuscitation.
c. Recommended for persons responsible for performing a complete resuscitation (or providing direct assistance).
d. It is compulsory for an NRP instructor to complete an Advanced Provider Course for becoming a Regional Trainer.

Ans. A Provider course is designed for healthcare professionals/workers involved in any aspect of newborn care and neonatal resuscitation. This usually includes Pediatricians, Obstetricians, Anesthetists, Medical officers, PG students ofpediatrics, gynecologist & obstetrician,Midwives,Staff Nurses (ANM, GNM) and Paramedic staff in private hospitals.

Ans. Recommended for persons responsible for performing a complete resuscitation (or providing direct assistance).

Ans. This course teaches a stepwise approach to basic neonatal resuscitation and care of newborn at birth.

The provider course could be:
- One day duration - 10 hours (BNCRP part 1) by completing it the provider will get certificate for Part 1 only. Part one covers only Basic Newborn Resuscitation
- Two day duration (BNCRP part 1 & 2); It may be completed on two consecutive Sundays or on two consecutive days (which ever is convenient to local organizers and participants. They will be provided certificate of completing “Full BNCRP Course”.

Ans.Content of both courses is same. In Govt. Sector program is known as NSSK while in Pvt Sector it is called IAP NNF NRP FGM BNCRP. But people commonly refer this also as NSSK.

Ans.The length of the NRP Advanced Provider course is about 10 hours.

Ans.Two years from date of course completion.

Ans. Instructor Courses are of two levels:
a. NRP Regional Trainer
b. NRP District Instructor

Ans. An NRP Instructor course is designed to create Instructors who can further impart NRP Instructor and Provider courses to potential candidates in either category. Participants must be carefully chosen considering their experience of working in maternity and neonatal facilities, and must successfully complete training requirement, with an instructor course component, suited to their instructor level.

Ans. District NRP Instructor is the key person for dissemination of NRP at District level. The eligibility criteria for a District Instructor are given below -

- Should be a Paediatrician, Obstetrician, Anaesthetist, medical graduate or Qualified Nurse with newborn training / experience
- Should have a training and experience in the hospital care of newborns in a delivery room or newborn / critical care nursery settings. The ideal instructor will have a ongoing delivery room experience
- Should have clinical responsibilities within a hospital or other appropriate medical facility
- Should have a current IAP NNF NRP FGM BNCRP Provider Certificate or take an NRP District Instructor course that includes provider component. Persons who have received NSSK training in Govt Sector conducted by IAP can become DI under NRP FGM by completing training in Instructor component of DI Course.
- Should have good communication skills and leadership qualities
- Should be committed to train BNCRP / NSSK Providers in his/her District

Note: It is essential that the NRP District Instructors possess the knowledge and skills presented in the provider course. For this reason, persons are required to complete the provider course before taking an instructor course. If they have not taken a separate provider course, they must take an NRP instructor course that includes the provider component.

Ans. District Instructors course is of one-day duration and will includes :
- BNCRP Provider Course
- Instructor Portions related to their responsibilities
- Documentation protocols of NRP FGM.

Ans. The Instructor-learner ratio for District Instructor (DI) course is as follows:
- One instructor for every 6 - 8 participants is usually required.
- A District Instructor's Training Program has 30-40 participants, and 6-8 Instructors.
- There should be at least 2 Regional trainers to give lectures and supervise work stations, but the rest of the work stations can be managed by trained and experienced District NRP Instructors from the same or nearby district (who have current card and have conducted at least two provider courses).

Ans. Instructors for NRP courses must meet the training requirements outlined in the following table -

There must be enough Instructors to support learners. The recommended ratio is One Instructor for every 6-8 learners.
Persons who are not NRP instructors may be used as guest lecturers to present supplementary contents such as pharmacology of drugs, sequel of perinatal asphyxia, adult learning principles or concepts related to NRP regionalization. Guest lecturers cannot replace the NRP instructors and should not be listed on the Course Roster form submitted.

Ans. Validity of Instructor status is explained below -
- Every NRP Regional trainer and District Instructor must teach or assist with at least 2 NRP courses during the 2 years for which instructor card is valid.
- For a Regional trainer, at least 1 course during the 2 years period must include a provider component.
- No grace period is allowed beyond the expiration date of their card. If the teaching requirement is not met by the expiration date on the card, the instructor status is lost. To regain instructor status, a person is required to retake the provider course and the NRP instructor components.
- NRP District Instructors and Regional trainers are not expected to maintain a current provider card in addition to their instructor card. Persons who maintain their instructor card are also considered NRP providers. Once they become instructors, it is unnecessary for them to renew their provider card every two years if they continue to fulfil the requirements for maintaining their instructor status.
- It is recommended however, that NRP instructors test themselves by taking the entire written evaluation online every 1-2 years

Ans. A District Instructor should have the following qualities -
- Experience in caring for newborns
- Ability to learn and teach resuscitation procedures
- Ability to implement NRP enthusiastically
- Good interpersonal skills and self confidence working with all levels of professionals
- Ability to meet the time commitment necessary to implement the NRP in his or her district
- Proficiency in local dialect

Ans. The responsibilities for each type of instructor are outlined below -

NRP District Instructor -
- Provides “ BNCRP ” NRP courses for those desiring NRP provider status
- Assists in training of District NRP Instructors if desired by regional trainers after conducting at least 2 provider provider courses
- Follows course documentation procedures
- Interacts with Regional trainer(s) to ensure that District’s NRP training needs are met
- Teaches or assists with at least two NRP courses during the 2 years for which the instructor card is valid

NRP Regional Trainer
- Trains District NRP Instructors, conducts Advanced Provider course and BNCRP Provider courses
- Assist in training of Regional trainers if desired by National task force after conducting at least one District Instructor’s course and two provider courses
- Provides ongoing support for District Instructors and maintains ongoing interactions with Providers, District Instructors, other regional trainers and state Academic coordinator
- Acts as crucial link between District/ state programs and NRP state and zonal coordinators
- Teaches or assists with at least 2 NRP courses during the 2 years for which the instructor card is valid (At least one course must include a provider component)
